The organizations who have signed below express their solidarity with the community of Cherán K´eri and join the strong call made by the communities of the P´urhépecha Plateau in Michoacán, in response to the armed attack they have suffered by unknown individuals on July 2nd when they attempted to enter areas within their territory. The Community Patrol contained the violent incursion, which has resulted, to date, in the murder of one member of the community security organization and another seriously injured.

Cherán K’eri is a community that for 14 years has demonstrated that community organization is key to preserving life. It has been an example of an autonomous process capable of self-governance and willingness to join forces in the face of the damage that various actors have attempted to do to the P’urhépecha community in attempts to gain control of the territory for the illegal exploitation of natural resources.

This attack adds to the multiple attacks that various communities in the P’urhépecha Plateau have suffered in recent years, which have intensified in 2025. The attacks have had a differentiated impact on women, children, and youth. This information has been documented and shared with various state and federal government agencies.

We urge the Government of the State of Michoacán and the Federal Government to:

• Coordinate with the Cherán K’eri Community Government to address the emergency and prevent further armed attacks on the community.
• Guarantee the physical integrity and safety of the civilian population, especially vulnerable groups such as women, girls, boys, and the elderly.
• Generate security actions in the region, respecting autonomy and emphasizing areas where the aggressor groups have been relocated and settled.
• To promptly and expeditiously address the situation of violence affecting the communities of the P’urépecha Plateau, in coordination with them, respecting and safeguarding their self-determination and autonomy.
• Investigate and punish those who participated, directly or indirectly, in the armed attack against the Purhépecha communities.
• We call on civil society, the media, and solidarity organizations to remain vigilant, spread the word about what happened, and support the demands of the autonomous community of Cherán K’eri.
